Psychoanalysis Approach: My Unfortunate Lesson Plan

When I was still in college, our professor told us to fabricate a lesson plan. It will revolve around the specific topic that we are assigned the whole semester. Honestly, this “lesson plan thing” of mine is incorrect in terms of the format. Lucky for me I had this topic stuffed in my mind since the day we started our thesis. Hence, the Psychoanalysis Approach. However, the way the approach is discussed and elaborated below is valid. I don’t like the notion of the activities, though. As for the moment, check it yourself and let me know if I miss something essential here.

Psychoanalysis aims to understand the depths of an individual’s repressed emotions, feelings and etc. Basically, as what others would term it, making the unconscious conscious. This was coined by one of the pillars of Psychology and, of course, considered as the Father of Psychology. Later, the latter’s students religiously used it as an approach or technique to interpret literature itself. And, this is where Psychoanalysis approach comes, where a complex understanding and/or deciphering of the unknown.

This study will help students to understand further the tenets of Psychoanalysis regardless of what novels this lesson should stumble upon. This aspires to deviate what psychoanalysis is, was and will be to fully understand how it should be applied as an approach in the realm of literary criticism. To wit, students shall explicitly put into mind how such peculiar literary approach shall be given emphasis and essential as far as literary criticism is concern.

Instead of utilizing directly Psychoanalysis as a tool for an arduous criticism, this shall be carefully studied through movies or clips that pertain to including but not limited to Psychology, Human Entomology, Sigmund Freud’s works, as long as Psychoanalysis serves as a basis. Through this, incorporating it as an approach to the field of literary criticism will just be a work in the park. However, using novels as a medium for constructing the Psychoanalysis approach can also be considered. There will be recognition every after the film-watching or application to make sure that the details per se are profusely captured. Then, applying it as an approach to any literary mediums, i.e. novels, poems, movies, etc. shall be acknowledged.

First, there will be a conduction of film-viewing that inculcates the history and roots of Psychoanalysis which will feature the works of Sigmund Freud. This is to better understand how Psychoanalysis circles in the world of Psychology long before it was escalated to a mean of criticism. Most of these films can be ferret out in studies conducted by knowledge-heir channels or psychological entities. Casting these films won’t be a problem, though. After each movie is watched, each student shall be asked to write a 5–paragraph essay on what they have understood. There will be no discussions yet until the next day. Their papers will be reviewed to see what certain niche of Psychoanalysis they have missed then a thorough application on it, as an approach, to any literary mediums. This adaptation will then serve as a template of how well versed they are on the literary approach, Psychoanalysis.
